I like this place. It probably isn't for everyone, but I have been here several times and will be back. While not unique to Mexican food elsewhere, Des Moines doesn't have too many counter service Mexican places. The fare is simple here - cheap styrofoam and cheaper utensils and thin napkins. They could stand some upgrades in this department. Sometimes you can spend a little more and probably come out the same as people will use less. The food is good. Lots of choices and breakfast items all day too. I am a big juevos rancheros fan, and they have a terrific plate. The sauce is more of a pico/salsa that I can just eat with a fork. The serving sizes are plentiful. You have to order and pay or chips, but they are worth it. Warm and crispy! There are several flavors of salsa to choose from at the counter. The place is right by Shot Gun Betty's and is open late. Needless to say it turns into a place for food after drinking. It will be a bit of a trash pit at a certain hour, but if you are here then chances are you will not really care. Good solid food like the fast food Mexican places that are all over Southern California.

If you want a giant burrito or an amazing quesadilla this is the place for you. Although its the best food after the bars, I'm sitting here getting food for Sunday night dinner. Its not a fancy place, but if you want good food to go to eat in front of the TV this is the place for you!

While the food is good here, the manager is not very nice. I had a complaint since I only got one Tortilla with my fajitas. I told him, "one tortilla with a plate of fajitas is ridiculous." He replied, "it maybe for you but it's not for me." I will admit the tortilla was large but it wasn't large enough to justify just giving me one tortilla for my food. The manager also proceeded to tell me I get what I order. I asked him where it says on the menu that I only get one tortilla with my meal, he could not point that out. He also had a very rude smirk on his face through out this exchange. I would recommend avoiding this location, I've never had this poor of service at any other location. The lack of a nice staff at this location has earned it two stars in my book, if it wasn't for the fact the food is as good as at other locations I would give it one star.

We ran across this restaurant on our way through town and had a great meal. The burrito was especially good and we really enjoyed their salsa bar with chips.

Great Mexican fast food joint. To explain it to people who don't understand this is not a typical sit down Mexican restaurant. It is more of a taco bell but instead of Americanized Mexican food it is more traditional. The food was fresh and the portions were fairly large. The salsas were fresh, spicy and authentic. They were not your typical watered down salsa you would get at a discount place. The burito was nicely portioned and packed full of meat and beans. The enchilada had a nice spicy salsa covering it. The churros are an excellent desert. They were straight out of the fryer and piping hot. Sort of a crispy, hot, straight Mexican doughnut stuffed with a cream filling covered in cinnamon and sugar. Absolute bliss!

Fantastic, greasy deliciousness! Came here missing my favorite Mexican place in the world (Muchas Gracias in Portland, OR 24 hours of perfect drunk food) and found it's younger and only slightly less- yummy brother. Service is quick and to order-- I can't help that I hate onions, ok? and I totally agree that the sauce selection is worth getting out of the car for, plus I couldn't understand a word through that loud speaker from the early 90s that they have in the drive-through. We took a minute to order and I was treated to listening to the Spanish-speaking woman behind the counter complaining about "expletive slow customers acting like we have all day and nothing else to do" in a language that she obviously has no idea many Americans with blonde hair know how to speak. I found it hilarious. I highly recommend the 3 rolled taquitos (5 if you're feeling frisky) with guacamole, cheese and I added sour cream cuz I'm a baller that likes to spend my hard-earned money on fattening happiness. Carne asada nachos are pretty awesome but if you, like me, believe onions to be the spawn of satan, don't forget to leave off the pico de gallo and a 1/2 order is a full meal unless you feel the need to sing a whale song. This is my new favorite Mexican place in my new favoritest city that I just moved to-- I think it kicks Tasty Taco's behind in almost every way. Come here if you like super hot hot sauce, greasy amazingness in your mouth and enjoy being insulted by potty-mouthed employees who are adorably clueless that Spanish isn't an exotic language that no one but their coworkers are able to understand :)

I ordered tacos individually. Carne Asada and Carnitas were great. Fish was soso. They are pretty good size. Full with just two. My buddy ordered Two burritos combo. It looks great and were huge. I will try them next time.

Convenient hours (drive thru is open 24 hours!!), tasty homemade chips and generous portion sizes make me a definite fan of Abelardos, especially for a late-night fast food fix. The food can sometimes be kind-of bland, and wait at the drive-thru can often be excessively long, but those are my only gripes.

Never used the drive up, but it is very new to the West Glen site. They are still working out some of the bugs. We go there maybe once a week and it is always very good and the service is fast. I usually have #11 and my husband tries everything. The salsa's are great and I like to bring home tamales for the next day.

Puts other taco joints including high-end and to-go to shame by serving generous portions using authentic ingredients. I always stop by after work and get the chimichanga or the abodabo(pork) burrito.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
